Dry-mesic prairie restoration

Kris & Penny Kubly (and David) looking for new species in their remnant prairie restoration.

The Kublys discovered this remnant many years ago. By chance, they cleared one small area on a steep hillside that was covered in small trees and brush. The following couple of growing seasons, many unique and uncommon prairie species appeared. Since then, the entire hillside, and beyond, has been cleared of invasive brush. The prairie is well on its way to recovery, and each year new species are discovered. Interestingly, the small area that the Kublys initially cleared is still the most ecologically rich today. How they knew where to target their first clearing efforts remains a mystery. But it exemplifies one of the wonderments of ecological restoration - you just never know what might show up!
